Galerie Gosserez presents the hybrid “Jean-Jean” shelving unit by the young trio Numéro 111. Two units with different sizes and wood species are placed side by side to form a piece of furniture to be used as required, a paradoxical format on the verge of tumbling, simply bound by two thumbscrews which allow it to subtly become one. Independent and back to back, each module becomes the necessary complement of the other. The rough, natural wood interlocks and confronts the superficial and smooth appearance of the painted wood to give rise to a sculptural and functional piece.

N°111 consists of 3 individuals, Sophie Françon, Jennifer Julien and Grégory Peyrache. Comprising two designers and one architect, the team asserts a global approach, not restricting themselves to one scale, method, or discipline. Sensitive to forms and materials, N°111 above all observes everyday life, questioning surroundings and suggesting communal creations, established from shared thoughts and styles. Each project attempts to closely interlink the design and manufacturing process. The N°111 office convenes around various projects, with objects, furniture, architecture, interior design and scenography as scope.

The use of composite materials offers unique creative opportunities in the field of furniture design, especially in terms of shape, texture and innovative use. However, the ecological and sanitary impact associated with use of such materials remains problematic. A composite of natural origin was then essential and ramie introduced most appropriate mechanical properties for the project. This fiber, from a variety of nettle, appears among the most resistant natural fibers which possess more superior qualities than fiberglass.

The design is minimalistic; the lines of Katra highlight the intrinsic qualities of the material: strength, lightness, in a formal definition that only composites can offer.

‘The house is located in the hottest area in Japan during summer.
There is humid and high temperature.
And temperature may exceed 40 degrees.
Because of that, almost houses have an air conditioner.
However, since the client doesn’t like cold winds from air conditioners, he wants to the comfortable house without an air conditioner.
In the beginning, to make air easily flowing, we put boxes like tunnel to divide yard into south and north.
In hot summer, not to sunlight brighten the room, we adjusted ‘eaves’, ‘wall’ and ‘wing walls’, and had windows leaning to get more breeze.
It is considering bringing pleasant, obstructing surrounding eyes, to have windows leaning.
And then we had ceiling leaning to enlarge the breezes into the room.
In cold winter, the sun orbit is lower than in summer, so that sunshine light in the room.
As white floor and leaning ceiling reflect light, sunlight reaches in the recesses of the room.
When designing the breezes flowing, we got Shape of ‘Ojigi’ (a Japanese bowing with his whole heart).
That figure spread mellow lights the indoor and the outdoor.
During the day, you can delight in the beauty of contrast between lights and shadows.
During the night, you shall be enchanted by the mellow and elegant gradation of lights.
Last summer, Japan recorded the hottest summer.
But the client told us happily ‘winds flowed through the rooms, I had comfortable times in last summer’.’

‘With Trent Park in north of London being once the home of King Arthur and Camelot we drew inspiration for this project from the story of him drawing the sword Excalibur from a stone.
The 36 metre high stone shaped structure will have a surface that reflects its woodland environment, creating a less imposing structure whilst rendering the inside with an impressive airy void.
The glass-mirrored exterior will be layered with a film, making it visible for birds and a coating that makes the surface hydrophilic and self-cleaning.
The interior walls will be partly clad with wood and partly with a sound absorbing woodwool cement board to create a still environment and improve acoustics.
A 7m glass structure in the shape of a swords tip will let in light from outside and during the night a light will beam from the hole, illuminating the night sky, becoming a beacon for Trent park.
With the sites rich historical and mythological past we suggest that the future for Trent Park and this site will hold a multi faith meeting place and cultural centre. With London being known for its religious diversity we want this place to act as a spiritual sanctuary were people of all faiths, beliefs and no beliefs are welcomed alike. The building will also be able to host events such as theatre, opera and other cultural happenings.’

‘Dreaming, living, dying. The house of the poet.’ This was the brief that produced this beautiful house on three levels, one for each experience: Dreaming occupies the highest level, almost floating; living is a transparent middle garden level, close to nature; Dying / sleeping places the bedrooms lower down in a cave-like tranquil space. The whiteness and purity of the wrap around surrounding forms accentuate dream-like senses. Pure poetry.

‘To build a house for a poet. To make a house for dreaming, living and dying. A house in which to read, to write and to think.

We raised white walls to create a box open to the sky, like a nude, metaphysical garden. To create an interior world we plant leafy trees.

And floating in the centre, with a box with three levels. The highest for dreaming. The garden level for living. The deepest level for sleeping.

For dreaming, we created a cloud at the highest point. A library constructed with double height. With northern light for reading and writing, thinking and feeling.

For living, the garden with southern light, sunlight. A space that is all garden, with transparent walls that bring together inside and outside.

And for sleeping, perhaps dying, the deepest level. The bedrooms below, as if in a cave.

Once again, the cave and the cabin.

Dreaming, living, dying. The house of the poet.’
