The space is fragmented into different compartments that house the program in height.

Two apartments have been joined together altering the former layout, differentiating day and night areas while forming an overall homogeneous concept.

An ambitious adaptive re-use project – modern residences built within the walls of the old Theriesenhospital, the oldest building in Düsseldorf and a registered national landmark.

A radiant contemporary villa, given rhythm by a sequence of varying sized cubes made from pure materials: wood, stone, metal and glass.

The architect implemented the white cross as a new volume in the existing space and created openings into this white space. He lights up the periphery: the border between old an new. In that respect, the layer outside of the white cross becomes the outer space, generating pictures of ‘the old times’ like looking outside a window into another landscape.

The round and square shapes, soft blobs and new antiques create a unity of the architecture and the interior design.

Due to planning restrictions the façade had to be three metres wide or less creating a corridor-like space on such a narrow site. The architects tried to resolve this problem by creating a sense of continuity between the street and the back of the house.

Zerafa Studio’s design called for the installation of a museum quality interior with careful detailing and a thoughtful material selection that would retain the character and scale of the original space.

The main challenge was to reconfigure a public housing apartment amidst the regulatory constraints into an object of spatial flow. The concept was simple: to create a large space with distributed furniture and a mirrored surface to reflect the surrounding spaces.

The new design offers a uniform, open space which expands, becoming more complex or dense depending on its orientation and use.

A living space for a single male person creating a living room as large as possible with additional service spaces displaced around the main room and form a sort of enclosed cupboard.

The transformation of this small apartment has above all been strategic: Decompartmentalize the place so as to fit out an open plan and elude the demand of an extra room by placing right in the centre of its space a suspended white cube generating playful and unusual situations.
