LaM – Lille Museum of Modern, Contemporary & Outsider Art. Refurbishment and extension of the existing modern Art Museum by Manuelle Gautrand Architectes in Allée du Musée, Villeneuve d’Ascq – France.
Manuelle Gautrand redesigned, or rather reinvented the landscape, designing a building that follows the contour lines of the site plan and wraps around the existing building.
The proposed structure WOVEN endeavours to capture each of these identifying aspects of local environment, tribal society, and trans regional entrepreneurship in the outer and inner characteristics of one emblematic elevated building.
The memorial design begins with an abstract object, solid, pure and whole, one that is composed of a number of uniform rectangular tubes. Elements are then purposefully erased to affect dissolution of the whole and signify that for humanity, our loss is permanent.
The building’s typology develops sequentially, its structure similar to that of a film where the undisputed protagonist is the automobile. In fact the visitor, as the spectator of a film, is obliged, frame by frame, to follow the physical and psychological route as dictated by the museum’s architect.
