A two-dimensional black cube forms the negative centre of a huge circle of couscous. The cube stands for the Kaaba – known more for its religious function than for its pure design, it is one of the most recognizable icons of Arab culture. It is often referred to, however, as a very early example of modern aesthetics, as well as of the non-figurative representation of the world in Islam.
