‘An unexpected surprise occurs when you look into the lamp, and find that by looking through the triangle in the middle, you can see history mirrored indefinitely.’

Rabobank invited Frederike Top to design a custom lamp for the ‘Ornamentroom’ of the Rabobank Utrecht and requested a site-specific object that connects past and present.

Frederike came up with a surprising project, the Caleidoscope XL, a hexagonal lamp made of partly white-coated stainless steel. The Caleidoscope XL’s impressive volume dominates the Ornamentroom and simultaneously manages to blend with its context, as if a camouflage technique was implemented.

When looking into the lamp, a surprise awaits. The triangular void in the middle of the lamp unveils the ‘history’ of the building. The ceiling is reflected in the internal surfaces of the lamp and mirrored indefinitely, resulting in an unexpected, fragmented representation of the lamp’s context. The historic space containing the Caleidoscope XL lamp is wrapped inside it!
