RePly is a one piece pressed, stackable chair created from several sheets/layers of birch plywood. A modern interpretation of the ‘old farmer chair,’ RePly, designed by Roderick Vos for Dutch manufacturer ‘Bert Plantagie,’ will be presented at the IMM Cologne, January 18-23, 2011.
‘For me personally, a one piece chair is the optimum in machine oriented furniture design. I love ‘simplicity’ when designing products. It has always been a guideline for all my work. That’s why I only used one material for this project: Veneer/plywood. A number of experiments were made in order to create this ‘one piece pressed chair’. The legs, seat, and backrest are realised in ‘one production pressing-process’ in order to keep the production costs low. A unique pressing mould was made in order to realise this chair.
Functional easthetics:
The back legs connecting the seat and the back became the major structural element in this design. By giving the upper back legs a twisted, curved shape extra strength was obtained, giving the chair at the same time it’s charismatic look. Thoughtfull and efficient use of FSC plywood , and the ‘one material & manufacturing process’ were definitely my personal guidelines for this project. I always focus on durability.’
