The ever changing soft shadows of the diffused light give the feeling that the space is alive, in a continuous state of transition between light and darkness.

Between Nature and Art
There’s just some Light.
It seems that it is artificial as well as it is natural.
But still, an absolute existence…

Jun Igarashi

The ‘Rectangle of light’ residence is located in the north part of Sapporo, Japan. The site itself is very small, less than 120sqm resulting in an extremely small building footprint of 40sqm. The overall design of the house is characterised by its introversion. The bathroom and the staircase form a buffer zone on the north side of the building isolating the house from the street. The building’s skin is wrapped up with wooden boards, hiding all ventilation openings. There is no direct visual connection of the interior with the exterior. Natural light reaches the living spaces through an insolation duct on the south of the building. The ever changing soft shadows of the indirect diffused light give the feeling that the space itself is alive in a continuous state of transition between light and darkness.
