Perfect – acrylic and paper on wall – in collaboration with Paris Koutsikos – Oct 2010
Street art is always an intriguing intervention in the urban grid, ‘nesting’ in the neglected walls of the cities, a metropolitan parasite and often an outcast in institutional art. Within this context, PERFECT, the latest mural by Alexandros Vasmoulakis, in collaboration with Paris Koutsikos for the Stroke 03 Street Art Fair in Berlin is an ambiguous addition to the cities palimpsest. Two happy, girly faces and some flowers add a pleasant touch to the grey Berlin walls. A bright orange advertising logo invites us to buy perfection. A closer look reveals that the figures are actually incomplete, paradoxically overlapping and fragmented. Previous layers of the wall’s palimpsest seem to be imperfectly erased. A pleasant imperfection overwhelms the logo’s claim for the perfect. The artists’ statement emphasises and praises this imperfection:
Perfect. A piece of ‘pseudo-advertisement’ that neglects beauty and offers a ‘product’, which is broken and wild. It can be neither sold nor bought; it smiles, screaming its perfection out loud. The magnificent world of advertisements, smiling faces, beautiful bodies, heavenly vacations, give their place to two crumpled girls who, ultimately happy, praise imperfection.
